The Constitution of
Vina F. Danks Middle School

Preamble
We the people of Vina Danks Middle School proclaim that our duty is to provide a safe environment for students and staff, to improve educational standards, and to make Vina Danks a community where everyone is comfortable and welcome. We will do our best to work with staff and student body to bring out the best in our school.
The name of our organization is The Student Leadership Council of Vina Francis Danks Middle School
Members
Section 1: The members of this organization are selected seventh and eighth grade
students of Vina Danks Middle School
Section 2: The Student Leadership Teacher will be the Student Council Advisor.
Section 3: The Student Council will consist of one or more represenatives from the
yearbook committee, Mideract Club, Builders Club, School Site Leadership Council,
PTSA, School Newspaper Committee, Cheer Squad, Sports Program, and
represenatives from each acedemic team.
Section 4: The elected officers shall consist of the Student Body President,
Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at arms, Pep Commissioner,
Athletic Commissioner, and Dance Commissioner.
Section 5: To become a member of the Student Council a student must attend the
introductory meetings, have at least a C average, have no suspensions that year, be
recommended by a teacher, and obtain permission of the Student Council Advisor or
Grade Level Coordinator.
Section 6: A student may be removed from the Student Council for inappropriate
behavior. Desicions of removal will be made by the advisor. Students may leave the
council on their own with the approval of their Grade Level Coordinator.
Election Of Officers
Section 1: Officers will be chosen by some form of popular election decided upon by
the sitting Student Council. Eligible voters will consist of the 6th and 7th grade
students.
Section 2: The Student Council may decide to conduct an election convention. If so,
candidates will first be nominated by no less than 20 of their peers, and be required
to complete all necessary nomination papers. Successfully nominated candidates
will first participate in a Primary Election. These results will be announced at a
convention attended by delgates selected from various classes. A candidate
recieving a majority of the vote (50% + 1) in the Primary Election will automatically be declared the winner. If no one gets a clear majority of the votes in the Primary Election, two candidates will be selected by the convention delegates to meet in a General Election of all eligible voters.
Duties
- Section 1: The duties of a President shall be:
- 1. To call to order all Student Council meetings.
- 2. To act as a represenative of our school.
- 3. To vote only in case of tie between Student Council Members.
- Section 2: The duties of a Vice-President shall be:
- 1. To take place of the President whenever he/she is absent.
- 2. To act as a represenative of our school.
- 3. To cochair the fundraising committee.
- Section 3: The duties of a treasurer shall be:
- 1. To keep an accurate acount of all Student Body finances.
- 2. To sign all vouchers approved by the Student Council.
- 3. To have all financial information available at request.
- 4. To cochair the fundraising committee.
- Section 4: The duties of a Secratary shall be:
- 1. To keep minutes and attendance of all meetings.
- 2. To prepare an agenda for meetings.
- 3. To chair the Public Relations committee.
- Section 5: The duties of a Sergeant of Arms shall be:
- 1. To maintain order at all meetings; by using warnings, detentions, etc.
- 2. To enforce all decisions of the President and Council.
- 3. To maintain a working understanding of the parliamentary procedure,
and act as the authority of such at Council Meetings.
- Section 6: The duties of a Dance Commissioner shall be:
- 1. To assist in planning all dances.
- 2. To be sure that all dances are planned and ready on time.
- 3. To chair the dance committee.
- Section 7: The duties of a Pep Commissioner shall be:
- 1. To work with the Athletic Commissioner on lunch time activities.
- 2. To organize pep rallies.
- 3. To encourage school spirit.
- 4. To organize activites that promote school spirit.
- 5. To chair the spirit committee.
- Section 8: The duties of a Athletic Commissioner shall be:
- 1. To work with the Pep Commissioner on lunch time activities and
intramural sports activities.
- 2. To work with students and staff on after school sports programs and
act as a liason between Student Council and the Athletic Director.
- 3. Chair the Athletics Committee.
- Section 9: The duties of a Dance Commissioner shall be:
- 1. To assure that all activities and proceedings are within the California
Education Code, school district policies, and school rules.
Meetings
Section 1: The Student Council meetings shall be held the second and fourth
Wednesday of each month.
Section 2: Special meetings may be called by the School President with approval
of the Student Council advisor.
Committees
Section 1: Sign-up sheets, to be on certain committees, will be handed out to
Student Council Members at the beginning of each semester.
Section 2: The Student Council President with the advice and consent of the
Student
Council Advisor will approve all appointments. A Chairperson will be
selected by the committee or by Presidential Appointment.
Section 3: Standing committees are a Dance, Spirit, Fundraising, Athletics, Public
Relations, and Red Ribbon.
Section 4: The President may appoint Special Committees at any time for any
special purpose.
Amendments
Section 1: This constitution may be changed or amended by a two thirds vote of the
Student Council and the approval of the Student Council Advisor.
In case of removal or resignation of any elected or appointed officers the position shall be filled by nominating names of current Student Council Members. The officer will thereby be appointed by a majority vote of the Student Council.
